University Putra Malaysia wins 2018 Nan Ying Cup debate competition

SEPANG — The debate team from University Putra Malaysia (UPM) won the championship of the 3rd Nan Ying Cup which was held on 23rd of December in Xiamen University Malaysia.
The four-member winning team of Nan Ying Cup 2018 was rewarded with a check of RM1500.
Nan Ying Cup is a Chinese debate competition organized by the Chinese Debate Club of XMUM.
Meanwhile, Qian Wei Ming from B team of XMUM won the best debater of Nan Ying Cup 2018.
There were 10 groups of participants from public universities and private universities competing among each other.
UPM’s team and B team of XMUM went head-to-head in the finals after defeating their opponent in the semi-finals.
After a three intense round of debate, UPM won the championship.
The classic Chinese proverb “the only sober among those who are drunk could be a delight or sorrow” was given as the topic for the cliff-hanging finals.
When asked about the purpose of the competition, “The competition is held to inspire fellow students to learn more about Chinese culture as well as to spread the Chinese language,” said Chan Ai Ting, president of XMUM Chinese debate club.
“This competition is amazing. I hope our students will not limit their skills in debate competition, but also apply it to their studies and lives,” Fan Zhi Quan, the principal assistant of XMUM said.
“It is also to encourage more interaction between XMUM students with other universities in order to enhance XMUM’s reputation,” Chan Ai Ting added.
One of the participants from UPM said that she was glad to have a chance to participate in this competition. “I learned a lot from the opponents and gained valuable advices from the judges.”
The first ever Nan Ying Cup Chinese Debate Competition was held back in year 2016.
