SEPANG: Students of Xiamen University Malaysia are encountering the risk of getting dengue due to the ongoing rainy season.

“Two students who live in the hostel were affected by dengue last week,” said one of the staffs from hostel management.
One of the dengue victims, Elizabeth,19, stated that the school authorities had sent her some comfort and checked her room twice when she was receiving treatment in the hospital. Her room was suspected as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
“I am afraid that I will be infected one day because my dorm is surrounded by accumulated water,” said Lim who lives in D3. “I bought a mosquito repellant after I heard about the dengue.”
Tan who lived in block D4 said that there is an unsolved issue of accumulated water in the fourth floor’s pantry.
“Rainy season all these days also causes the problem of accumulated water around the school campus and hostel area, it enables the mosquitoes to lay their eggs,” said Wong, one of the security guards in XMUM.
Mosquitoes usually breed in containers or places that hold stagnant water. It takes within 48 hours for the mosquito eggs to grow into larvae.
After the student council of Xiamen University Malaysia realized the severity of this issue, they took immediate action to solve the matter by fogging every single floor of the students’ dorm.

Fogging activity will be carried out on every Saturday around 5pm and the students will be informed through their academic e-mail.
Students are encouraged to clean the water in the containers or vases twice a week as these are the places where the mosquito lays their eggs.
Dengue is a disease that can cause high fever, achiness, vomiting, and even death if left untreated.
